چکیده

2014 A study is made of the formation of new planar regions during the electrohydrodynamic distortion of the cholesteric planar texture in liquid crystals with a negative dielectric anisotropy. With increasing voltage successive planar regions are observed which are associated with an increasing number of helices across the layer with steady planar boundary conditions. The resulting pitch contraction occurs via discontinuities which can be related to S = (1) disclinations. The stability of the new planar regions if favoured by a large negative dielectric anisotropy. The threshold voltage for the square grid perturbation of these induced textures is much larger than that predicted theoretically by Helfrich and Hurault, whose theory only holds for cholesteric planar layers in which the natural pitch P0 occurs. Flexible area-color reflective displays based on electric-field-induced blueshift in a cholesteric liquid-crystal film

Haiqing Xianyu Kuan-Ming Chen Shin-Tson Wu Abstract — An electrically controllable blueshift of the reflection band is observed in a cholesteric liquid crystal with either positive or negative dielectric anisotropy. The change in optical properties is a result of a two-dimensional periodic undulation of the cholesteric texture, known as Helfrich deformation. This blueshift mechanism was used to...

Evidence of a Bulk Modulation in the Transition from the Transient Planar to the Planar Director Configuration in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Displays

In cholesteric liquid crystals with a positive dielectric anisotropy, the relaxation from the electric field aligned director configuration to the stable zero field director configuration proceeds via a metastable transient planar director configuration which has a pitch distinct from the equilibrium state. Here, the transition from the transient planar to the equilibrium zero-field state is sh...

Lower operation voltage in dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystals based on the thermodielectric effect.

Dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystal (DFCLC) devices characteristically require high operation voltage, which hinders their further development in thin-film-transistor driving. Here we report on a lower-voltage switching method based on the thermodielectric effect. This technique entails applying a high-frequency voltage to occasion dielectric oscillation heating so to induce the increase ...

Electrohydrodynamic instability in cholesteric liquid crystals

We report electrohydrodynamic instability in a cholesteric liquid crystal—a mixture of p-methoxy benzylidene p-n-butylaniline (MBBA) and a cholesteric dopant cholesteryl nonanoate (CN), in the presence of a superimposed magnetic field H. We have found a certain intensity H with respect to the instability in this mixture with negative dielectric anisotropy, beyond which a stripe pattern appears....
